Roof de Karoo Mountain Bike Challenge

The Roof de Karoo is a stunning three-day 177 km mountain bike traverse. It is the proud product of the Mountain Zebra Camdeboo Protected Environment (MZCPE). This mountain biking adventure journeys over plateaus grazed by herds of antelope, crosses desolate stretches of dramatic Karoo landscape with a unique diversity of fauna and flora and navigates mountain ridges, presenting awesome panoramic views stretching for miles on end.

The 2019 event of the Roof de Karoo will be from the 4th - 7th of April 2019 and explores parts of the 268 000 hectares of the Protected Environment. The MZCPE was created to protect the critical biodiversity of the area that lies between the Mountain Zebra National Park and the Camdeboo National Park in the Greater Karoo. The adventure trail is held in partnership with SANParks and is the only cycle event in South Africa starting and finishing in 2 National Parks.

Cyclists depart from the Mountain Zebra National Park campsite early Friday morning in the crisp Karoo air and end under the shadow of the imposing 2430m high Nardou mountain peak. After 75 kilometres and an elevation gain of 1260m, the cyclists can relax under the shade of the poplar trees and cool off in the stream at the source of the Great Fish River.

Day 2 starts with a climb to the top Nardou on the old ox-wagon track and includes a 500m portage. Cyclists are rewarded with magnificent panoramic views and an exciting downhill, then criss-cross the Sundays River through private game farms, finishing at Roodebloem farm 70km later.

The last day includes a 32 km relaxing cycle through Camdeboo National Park to Winterhoek Guest House where the event officially ends with hearty brunch before participants depart or are shuttled back to their cars at MZNP.

Entry fees include 3-nights tented accommodation, all meals (Thursday supper to Sunday brunch), a goody bag, a CORE Merino woollen clothing item, buff, 3 nights tented accommodation, delicious Karoo cuisine, drinks, snacks, National Park fees, a helicopter flight and shuttle service.

With stunning views to marvel at while on the bike, an opportunity to camp out under the Karoo skies and experience true Karoo hospitality and cuisine prepared by the local farmers, this event is as special as the area where it takes place.

Supporters and family are encouraged to come along and embrace the opportunity to discover the other gems found in the area. The organizers will make special arrangements for supporters dependant on availability.
